Onion trip

This weekend (when weather was so nice to us!) we finally went to lake Peipus (Peipsi) after the onions.

When I told someone that we are going after the onions, people were surprised and thought we are going to some farm to buy for a whole winter, or something. But Estonians knew very well, what we are talking about. :)

On the shore of lake Peipsi, which is on Estonian-Russian border, is a line of cute villages, mostly inhabited by local Russians, who have maintained the Old Believer religion. There are tiny Old Believer churches, as well as some museums. One long road goes by the big Peipsi (it's as huge as a sea), and the villages and houses are by the roadside. People who live there have always earned their living by two things - 1. fishing on the lake and 2. growing onions (which go nicely together with the fish).

Nowadays they get a lot of income from tourists, who come to buy onions. They are somehow special - the unique location, the old ladies and men, who are selling them by their homes, the very aesthetic way how the onions are tied together (it serves as a kitchen decoration), and the onions are especially fragrant and tasty.

There are even some onion-fares happening (we came across one, the village was full of cars and people), and the Onion-road has even it's own homepage.
I definitely suggest to take this trip, sometime between August and October.

The village, the road.. and the onions.

And the people, who sell them. They are special.

Who would have thought onions can be so beautiful?

And some garlic as well.

Baby was sleepy.. :) But I think she liked it.

Taken to see the world by her godmother and godfather. :)

We also bought some.

The dog cost 3 €. We didn't take him only because our car was already full of onions..

Is it a lake, or a sea?

Don't know.. But good enough for sleeping. :)
